Quick Tip: How To Manage Social Anxiety Before Networking Events

Networking events can create valuable professional opportunities, but they can also feel intimidating for those who experience social anxiety. The pressure to approach unfamiliar people and make a positive impression can make even a worthwhile conversation feel daunting.

Finding ways to reduce that pressure ahead of time can make it easier to engage once you’re there, and even small steps can make the experience feel more comfortable. Below, Lisa shares a practical strategy for managing anxiety and making meaningful connections.

Looking at Networking as a Way to Support Others

I no longer even consider them networking events; they are simply new ways to make connections and support someone. My goal in networking is to have a generative dialogue, or to “coach” a person without them realizing they are being coached. Be curious about them, what is going on in their world, what’s exciting to them and what keeps them up at night. These end up being wonderful conversations, and often create follow-up dialogues where we discuss coaching specifically.
