Quick Tip: Small Leadership Behaviors That Can Negatively Impact Company Culture

Many of the actions that shape workplace culture aren’t part of formal policies or big decisions; they show up in small, everyday moments. Comments made in passing or subtle differences in how certain employees are regarded can land very differently from how a leader intends, especially when similar patterns repeat. Over time, these behaviors can quietly erode trust, engagement and psychological safety, even when intentions are good.

The small leadership habit noted below can have an unintentionally negative impact on culture, along with practical ways to course-correct.

Failing To Be Fully Present

Leaders who aren't fully present in meetings send a dangerous message that the people in the room are not a priority. The leader may look at his or her phone, for example. This behavior immediately shuts down the possibility for generative dialogue. Teams that set behavioral norms and enforce them can correct this. For example, no distractions, confidentiality—whatever the team needs to feel seen and heard.
